The USS South Dakota

On one of our first trips to Sioux Falls we saw a sign for the USS South Dakota Memorial. Curious as to how they got a battleship to the middle of the country far from any large (HUGE) waterways we made plans to visit before Labor Day. As was the case in Minnesota many of the parks and history sites close all or part of their exhibits on Labor Day due to impending inclement weather. When we got to the memorial we learned that bringing the pieces of the battleship that they did bring was no small feat, requiring specially made railroad cars among other things. There is a concrete wall that mimics the perimeter of the ship so you can get a sense of how big it was.
