Full Cold Moon

There was a beautiful halo around December's full moon. The halo is caused by refraction of ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. Folklore tells us that a halo around the moon means bad weather is on its way. This may be true, because the ice crystals that make up the halo signify high altitude, thin, cirrus clouds that normally proceed a warm front by a few days. And a warm front is typically associated with a low pressure system which we commonly call a storm.
