Shetek Monument

We've driven by the sign for Slaughter Slough and this monument every time we've visited Lake Shetek State Park but had never stopped. Another page in the sad chapter of Minnesota history known variously as the Sioux Uprising, the Dakota Conflict or the Dakota War. While I'm not begrudging the families need to have monuments and we've visited the monument to the Dakota that were hanged in Mankato, I have read that there were Dakota women and children killed on the march to their imprisonment and I haven't seen that monument. Nor have I seen a monument to the Dakota that died of starvation while waiting for the food and annuities promised them when they signed the treaties giving away their land. . .

For those of you that come to the blog to see pictures of our family and our doings we'll get right back to that.
