Light Pillars

It is pretty dark where we live and usually we can't see the lights from town. We were driving home from hockey around 9 pm one cold, dark night and at first glance we thought we were seeing the aurora borealis. Then we realized it was just light pillars. A light pillar occurs when artificial or natural light refracts off of ice or snow crystals. My photo does not do it justice. I'll have to brush up on my skills just in case we do get a chance to see the aurora borealis. . .
