The Treaty Site History Center

is located near St. Peter, MN. The river fording site was known as Traverse De Sioux or Crossing Place of the Sioux. On this site the Treaty of Traverse De Sioux was signed on July 25, 1851 transferring 24 million acres from the Sioux to the US government. It consisted of most of MN West of the Mississippi and South of a line from present day St. Cloud to Moorhead, as well as portions of South Dakota and Iowa. The signing created a land rush that brought settlers to the land acquired from the Sioux.
