West Newton

was a thriving riverboat town on the Minnesota River in 1870 served by the Harkin Store and Post Office. The railroad bypassed the town in favor of New Ulm and reduced riverboat traffic. Next was the grasshopper plague and finally rural mail delivery, the Harkin Store closed its doors in 1901. The store has been restored to its 1870's appearance. The children wrote on slates with pencils, played checkers and tried on bonnets and hats.
