was built in 1824 at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers to support the nearby United States Indian Agency that regulated the fur trade. Within its walls were the first church, hospital, school and library in what is now Minnesota. By 1858 when MN became a state, the fur trade was ended, the Indians restricted to reservations and white settlement had passed far beyond the fort it was sold and the land platted for a townsite. However, the fort reopened at the outbreak of the Civil War and continued as a training and supply base until World War II. It has been restored to what it was like in the 1840's.
